Will artificial intelligence transform medicine?
May 5, 2026 – French Academy of Medicine
The French Academy of Medicine, in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is organising a joint session on the applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare, with the aim of better understanding how to translate algorithms into clinical practice.
Artificial intelligence is currently attracting growing interest in the medical field. Presented alternately as the medicine of the future – or even as a potential substitute for doctors – it raises as many hopes as questions. Caught between technological promises and concerns about its implications, AI in healthcare calls for a rigorous and nuanced analysis.
The aim of this dedicated session is to present a reasoned approach to the artificial intelligence contributions in medicine. It will seek to establish a concrete link between fundamental advances in algorithms and their applications in clinical practice, closely aligned with the needs of patients and healthcare professionals. It will also provide an opportunity to strengthen scientific collaboration between MIT and French research teams.
This symposium builds upon the existing cooperation between the two institutions. It is the third event organized jointly by the French National Academy of Medicine – which, nearly ten years ago, set up a commission dedicated to artificial intelligence in healthcare, and has published several reference works on the subject – and MIT, an internationally renowned institution.
Experts from both institutions will speak on key topics:
– The integration of AI into clinical practice
– Advances developed at MIT
– The role of artificial intelligence in understanding sleep disorders
– Advanced analysis of medical images using machine learning
– Disease prevention
– And applications in cardiology
The session will conclude with a discussion designed to provide some perspective and place these innovations within a broader context, looking beyond purely technical considerations.
