Professor Jacques BELGHITI, first surgeon elected Deputy Secretary of the National Academy of Medicine

Elected President of the Division of Surgical Sciences of the National Academy of Medicine, of which he has been a member since 2010, Professor Jacques BELGHITI was elected Deputy Secretary of the National Academy of Medicine on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, for four years, succeeding Professor Pierre-François Plouin.

 

 

About Jacques BELGHITI 

Elected resident corresponding member in 2010 and then full member of the French National Academy of Medicine in April 2016, Jacques BELGHITI is the President of the Second Division of Surgical Sciences.

Professor emeritus at Paris 7, he headed the digestive surgery and liver transplantation department at Beaujon Hospital for nearly 20 years.

This experience as well as his scientific activity that shows more than 500 original articles and an H index of 120 have allowed him to lead international societies of surgery and transplantation and to organize several world congresses in Paris.

Knight of the Legion of Honor and Officer of the National Order of Merit, he is also a member of several international surgical associations including the American Surgical Association and the American College of Surgeons.

Following the presidency of the scientific council of the Biomedicine Agency, Jacques BELGHITI was appointed a member of the High Health Authority College in 2014 where he chaired the commission for  evaluation of medical devices and procedures.

In 2017, he participated in the creation of the innovation unit at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs and was appointed coordinator of the medical advisors at the APHP legal affairs department in 2019.

 

 About the Deputy Secretary of the National Academy of Medicine

The deputy Secretary is elected by and from among the members and members emeritus for four years renewable once. He or she assists the Perpetual Secretary in   the administration of the Academy. His election is approved by the President of the Republic.

The National Academy of Medicine is a legal public entity with a special status, placed under the protection of the President of the Republic. Its mission is to respond, on a non-profit basis, to the requests of the Government on all matters concerning public health, to deal with all matters of study and research that may contribute to the progress of the art of healing and to promote French medicine in the world.
