BOARD OF OFFICERS The officers of the National Academy of Medicine including the President, the Permanent Secretary, the Vice-President, the Treasurer and the Deputy Secretary represent the Academy and cater for its satisfactory operation.
The President
Appointed for one year, he chairs the sessions of the Academy, officers’ meetings as well as the governing board.
He leads members of the Academy or their deputies during official ceremonies, represents the Academy and acts as spokesman.
The President oversees the discussions of the Academy, puts proposals to the vote, gathers votes cast and proclaims the decisions of the Academy.
He secures orderly procedures
He may take part in the sessions of all the commissions with a consultative vote
The Permanent Secretary
He is in charge of administering the Academy and ensuring the rules are kept.
He prepares the sessions, draws up their the agenda, convenes the Governing Board and the Assembly, signs records of proceedings and letters written in the name of the Academy as well as all official documents it may issue, signs and initials all documents sent to the Academy and verifies that the Governing Board’s decisions are implemented.
Elected for 4 years, he can stand once for reelection.
His election is endorsed by decree from the President of the Republic.
He ensures that obituary speeches for deceased members are delivered.
He may take part in the sessions of all the commissions with a consultative vote.
The Vice-president
He is elected every year. In the event of vacancy of the Vice-presidency, a special election is organized.
His election is endorsed by the Minister of National Education.
In the event the President cannot discharge his duties, the Vice-president stands in for him.
The Vice-president becomes President the following year as of right.
The Treasurer
Elected for 4 years, he can stand for reelection. His election is submitted to endorsement by the Minister of National Education. In event of a vacancy during the year, a special election is organized.
The treasurer is in charge of the finances and property of the Academy which he manages in agreement with the Perpetual Secretary.
He carries out all the formalities required for the management of income and expenditure, donations, legacies and property of the Academy ; to that effect, he signs all relevant documents.
Every year, the Treasurer presents for approval to the Academy the financial report of the year elapsed.
The financial report is then forwarded for endorsement to the "Ministre chargé de l'Enseignement supérieur".
The Assistant Secretary
Elected for 4 years, he can stand once for reelection. He is entitled to assist the Perpetual Secretary in the whole of his functions
